— Manifesto / 01

We design gardens the way one composes a page:  geometry first, ornament only when it earns its place.

ATELIER GRÜN is a Milan-based studio of landscape architects, horticulturalists and visual designers. We work at the intersection of built form and living matter — building terraces, courtyards, urban parks and biophilic interiors that are measured, drawn, planted, and maintained with the same editorial care as a printed object.

Selected projects,
2018 — 2026.

Twelve built works across Italy, Switzerland and Japan. Each project is documented as a printed field-report — geometry, plant species, irrigation, maintenance schedule.

— Disciplines / 03

Three disciplines,
one grammar.

  1. 01

    Groundwork

Site analysis, topography, hydrology, soil mechanics. We map before we draw — and we draw before we plant.

    • Topographic survey
    • Hydrology & drainage
    • Soil & substrate design
    • Planting strategy
  2. 02

    Composition

Geometry, proportion, materials, light. Each landscape is composed as a single drawing — lines, masses, voids.

    • Masterplan & layout
    • Hardscape & materials
    • Water features
    • Lighting design
  3. 03

    Living systems

Horticulture as a designed system — biodiversity, irrigation, maintenance. A garden is not a photograph; it is a season.

    • Biodiversity strategy
    • Smart irrigation
    • Maintenance programme
    • Phytodepuration
— Method / 04

From site visit
to opening day.

  1. 01

    Site reading

Two-day field survey. Topography, sun-path, hydrology, soil, vegetation. We return with a dossier, not a sketch.

    2 weeks
  2. 02

    Concept & sketch

Hand-drawn plans, three massing options, a written brief. We align with the client before any 3D model.

    3 weeks
  3. 03

    Technical design

Construction drawings, planting plan, irrigation, lighting, BOQ. Drawn at 1:50, ready for the contractor.

    6–10 weeks
  4. 04

    Build & plant

On-site direction, weekly site visits, plant sourcing from trusted nurseries. We stay until the last specimen is in the ground.

    8–24 weeks

“A garden is the slowest architecture. We design it knowing it will out-live the building it sits next to — and the people who planted it.”
